Parent Involvement in Scouts SA⚜️
The most important aspect of parent involvement is the encouragement you give to your child. Kids who get the most out of Scouting are those who put the most into it. Every child needs encouragement and help at times, this is where you come in.
Scouts SA is a fully volunteer-run organization. Leaders, like you, have full-time commitments but spend extra hours preparing activities, keeping up with training, and managing behind-the-scenes tasks.
Support can vary based on each family’s circumstances. Here are areas where regular help is needed:
- Transport: Occasionally transporting children to various activities.
- Working Bees: The Scout Hall and surrounding property need regular maintenance. Families are welcome to help at one of the three yearly working bees or offer specialized skills (e.g., electrical, plumbing, carpentry).
- Assisting on Meeting Nights: Some activities are better and safer with extra hands. Parents assistance is appreciated to maintain an effective adult/child ratio.
- Parents Committee: The main function is to support Leaders by managing group finances, maintaining the hall and grounds, organizing fundraising and social activities, seeking potential leaders, and promoting the Group. The committee includes a chairperson, treasurer, secretary, and representatives from maintenance, fundraising, and publicity committees. Joining the Parents Committee is a great way to support without a weekly commitment and get to know other parents.
Becoming a Volunteer Leader
Most Leaders in Scouting are adults who deliver the Youth Program. They conduct fun activities with young people, usually weekly. As a Leader, you help young people learn new skills through the Scout method, young people lead, and adults support.
Being a Leader is rewarding! Scouts SA offers accredited training to support you on your journey. Leaders enjoy:
- Meeting a diverse group of people.
- Learning a sense of community.
- Getting out into nature and fresh air.
- The more energy you put in, the more you get out!
- Being part of one big family.
Learn new skills, enjoy adventures, and make a difference in young people’s lives. Check it out, no experience required. It’s life-changing!
Parent Code of Conduct
To ensure our Scouting activities are safe, timely, and fun for all, we ask parents to follow these guidelines:
- Be on Time: Arrive on time with the appropriate paperwork to maximize fun time.
- Respect Ceremonies: Some ceremonies mark the beginning and end of meetings. Please respect these and help teach children the importance of respectful behavior.
- Parent Chats: Hold catch-up chats with other parents outside the Scout Hall, in the kitchen, or the back room.
- Manage Siblings: Ensure siblings are not a distraction during activities and are safe within the Scout Hall and other activity sites.
- Parental Help: Parent help is crucial. Look for ways to assist.
- Encourage Responsible Behavior: Remind your child to behave responsibly at all times. Respect and mindfulness create a fun environment for everyone.
- Respect Leaders: All our Leaders volunteer their time. Please ensure your child is respectful and responsive to all Leaders at all times.
