CEO Update – Message from the President

Today I write with news that is both difficult to share and important for our Scouts SA community.

After ten years of service to Scouts SA, our Chief Executive Officer, James Sellers, has decided the time is right to move on from the Association and pursue a new leadership opportunity.

While we are naturally disappointed to see James leave, we are equally grateful for his contribution over the past decade and incredibly proud of what has been achieved during his time with Scouts SA.

James joined Scouts SA in 2016 as General Manager of Woodhouse Adventure Park. Under his leadership, Woodhouse was transformed from an organisation facing significant operational and financial challenges into the thriving and highly regarded destination it is today. He later became our inaugural Head of Commercial before being appointed Chief Executive Officer in 2022.

Across each of these roles, James has brought energy, integrity and a genuine commitment to the Scouting movement. As CEO, he has strengthened our governance, helped shape a clear strategic direction, built a strong Leadership Team and guided the Association through complex challenges with professionalism and care.

Importantly, James’ contribution will not simply be measured by what has been achieved during his tenure, but by the future that unfolds because of the foundations he has helped establish. His willingness to make bold decisions, listen with humility and lead with genuine compassion has left a lasting mark on our staff, volunteers, members and the wider community.

James leaves Scouts SA in a strong position. Our strategic direction is clear, our Leadership Team is capable and committed, and the Association is well placed to continue building on these foundations.

The Board and I are committed to ensuring a smooth transition. James will continue in his role while we work through that process, and we will keep the Scouts SA community informed of future arrangements in due course.

On behalf of the Board, I sincerely thank James for everything he has given to Scouts SA over the past ten years. While we will miss his leadership, we leave this chapter with great appreciation for his service and every confidence in the future of Scouts SA.

As we look ahead, I am also pleased to share that Chief Commissioner John Clarke has accepted a further three-year appointment. John’s ongoing leadership provides important continuity for our volunteer movement, and I look forward to continuing to work alongside him over the years ahead.

I know you will join me in thanking James, Louise and their family, wishing them every success in the next chapter, and congratulating John on his reappointment as Chief Commissioner.
