What do you need for Camping?
Be prepared for Adventure

Get ready for your next Scouting adventure!

Camping is one of the great experiences of Scouting! It’s a chance to explore the outdoors, learn new skills, build independence and make fantastic memories with friends.

Whether it’s your child’s first sleepover or their next big camping adventure, being prepared will help them make the most of the experience.

Below is a general packing checklist to help you get organised. Always check the information provided by your Leader before each camp, as equipment requirements will vary depending on the activities, location and weather.

And most importantly — LABEL EVERYTHING!

Medications

If your child requires medication during camp, please ensure you follow the instructions provided by your Leader.

Medications must be clearly labelled and managed in accordance with the camp’s requirements. Make sure all relevant medical information is up to date in Consent2Go.

Uniform

Your Leader will let you know whether Scout uniform is required for the camp or any particular activities.

Dilly Bags

A dilly bag is a handy way to transport and store your eating equipment while camping.

It’s usually a cloth drawstring bag, preferably made from breathable cotton, which allows equipment to dry and helps keep everything together.

What goes inside a dilly bag?

  • Plate
  • Bowl
  • Cup or mug
  • Knife, fork and spoon
  • Tea towel

Choose sturdy, reusable items such as metal or durable camping crockery to avoid breakages.

Make sure every item is clearly labelled with your child’s name!

You don’t need anything fancy — a simple cotton bag with a drawstring works well.

A Few Helpful Tips
  • Pack together: Involve your child in packing so they know what they’ve brought and where to find it.
  • Keep it simple: Choose practical, comfortable clothing that can get dirty.
  • Label everything: Clothing, water bottles, torches, shoes and eating equipment can easily get mixed up.
  • Check before buying: Some camping equipment may be available to borrow. Ask your Leader before purchasing expensive items.
  • Follow the camp notice: Your Leader will provide any additional requirements specific to the activity.
