Who we are

Scouts SA is part of a global movement with a common purpose to contribute to the development of young people by helping them learn and grow, and to play a constructive role in a global society. The purpose of the Scout Movement is to contribute to the education of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual potentials as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities.

The purpose mentions five areas related to a person’s potential; we call these the areas of personal growth. We see the sixth area, character, as the sum of the other five areas. To help us remember them, we refer to them as the “SPICES”.

Scouting is more than just a place for young people to have fun. “Creating a Better World” and “Education for Life” are common phrases connected to Scouting. As a global voluntary, non-political, educational movement of young people, supported by adults, it is open to, and inclusive of all.
